The Matterhorn

Here's a close look at the big draw in these parts, the Matterhorn. Towering to 4478 meters above sea level, The Matterhorn bears the title of "the highest free standing mountain in Europe". This writer for one does not know what that means.

The Matterhorn is not the highest mountain in Europe, that honour goes to Mont Blanc or Monte Bianco, depending upon whether you are speaking Italian or French.

The Matterhorn is not even the highest mountain in Switzerland. That distinction goes to The Dom, the beauty that towers over Saas Fee.

The Matterhorn is higher, but lest we forget, half of it is in Italy. No one can deny the Matterhorn's beauty and stature though, that much is clear.

You want to climb the Matterhorn? Be fit, be prepared, be in the company of a professional guide. Be warned.
