Zermatt street saga  Posted by : Bill Fogarty

In Zermat Switzerland both visitors and locals demand snowy streets. Whaddya make of that? Most folks want their streets squeaky clean during the winter months. Prevents slippin' and slidin' you know. However this is not the case in the Matterhorn dominated resort of Zermatt. It seems that Zermatt's powers that be cleaned the entire car-free Zermatt pedistrian area in order to prevent the above slides and their results; falls and civil suits. However this agressive cleaning of the streets, no matter how good the result (no falls no legal worries)did not sit well with either tourists or locals. They want snow-covered walkways in the car-free village. Seems all concerned prefer the magical Matterhorn resort snow covered. Fall anyone?

Zermatt/St. Moritz train  Posted by : Ted the Trainman

Ah the lickety split express traain, the Glacier Express, takes you from Zermatt to St. Moritz in around 8 hours. Ah but what a slow boat to China. You'll see older than the hills villages, bridges, the Oberalp pass and much more. You will not see the tunnels (dark you know). In any event after Zermatt skiing or St Moritz "hob nobbing" (read skiing and such) what a way to top off your holiday.

Matterhorn first climbers  Posted by : BF

The Matterhorn was one of the last of the main Alpine mountains to be ascended. The first serious attempts began around 1857, mostly from the Italian side. However, on July 14, 1865, in what is considered the last ascent of the golden age of alpinism, the party of Edward Whymper, Charles Hudson, Lord Francis Douglas, Douglas Robert Hadow, Michel Croz and the two Peter Taugwalders (father and son) was able to reach the summit by an ascent of the Hörnli ridge in Switzerland. Upon descent, Hadow, Croz, Hudson and Douglas fell to their deaths on the Matterhorn Glacier, and all but Douglas (whose body was never found) are buried in the Zermatt churchyard. Matterhorn Cervinia  Posted by : BF

The Matterhorn is probably the highest free standing mountain in Europe. Er, what does free standing mean? Anyway it is shared by the Italian, Aosta Valley resort of Cervinia and the Swiss resort of Zermatt. Cervinia offers 150km of skiing whilst Zermatt offers 200. Together, 350. The food is great in Cervinia and the Italian atmosphere unforgetabe.

Resorts Fear Recession  Posted by : Bill

In an article entitled "Alpine resorts fear a weak ski season" the International Herald Tribune brings up a number of valid points. It refers to the blessing of good early season snow and the just finished high season. The article goes on to say that, although high seasons are looking good, there is some trepidation over softer periods. Anyway read the entire article at http://www.iht.com/articles/2009/01/02/

Zermatt baggage tip  Posted by : Bill Fogarty

Rid yourself of your baggage on your next trip to Zermatt. Fly into either of Zermatt's main airports and take the train. Before you go, if your area has it, make use of the Fly-Rail Baggage service. This will let you go straight through customs and get on the train with only your hand luggage at the station. And, it just costs around 20CHF per bag. Check out their website at www.rail.ch/baggage).

Did you know that the Matterhorn is is 4470 Meters high and is located in the Penine Alps on The Swiss/Italian border? It was first climbed in 1865 by a team led by English climber Edward Whymper. The historical venture was not without tragedy as guide Peter Taugwalder and his son were killed in a fall which Whymper himself witnessed.
